The beginning of the development of the Birštonas resort is associated with 1846, when the doctor of the Stakliškiai resort Benediktas Balinskis, interested in the Birštonas springs, sent a patient here who was not helped by the Stakliškiai healing springs. The patient recovered in Birštonas. After long research and bureaucratic procedures, at the end of 1854, the Russian Minister of Internal Affairs signed a permit to establish the Birštonas resort. The next year, the first sanatorium was built, and by the 1850s, Birštonas, as a balneological resort, was already well known throughout the Russian Empire.
