Karolis Šarkus is a saxophonist and composer, one of the most active and progressive young creators of the Lithuanian jazz scene. His music combines the language of contemporary jazz with a clear melodic mindset, and the sound of the saxophone is characterized by a warm, rich tone and impeccable technique. Karolis is a laureate of the international competition Premio Internazionale Massimo Urbani, a recipient of the Young Music Performer Award of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, and the winner of the Baltic States Young Composers' Works for Big Band Competition. In 2023, he was invited to represent Lithuania at the Euroradio Jazz Orchestra, and in 2021, he released his debut album Palette of Feelings.
The program will feature Karolis Šarkus' latest work, XIDEA — an album born from fragments: unfinished sketches, notes and voice recordings that have long been waiting for their moment. The title symbolizes the space between inspiration and clarity – “X” denotes the unknown and the point of silence before sound, and “idea” – the beginning of a feeling. The album clearly reveals Karolis' compositional thinking: modern jazz is combined with the influences of other genres – from the atmospherics of film music to the energy of rock, and both a clear melodic line and expressive solos are important in the compositions. XIDEA is a personal and open musical story, in which fragmentary ideas turn into coherent, lively and emotionally intense music. During the performance, this music will unfold as a dynamic, constantly changing musical dialogue.
