“Vertical Money” (dir. Martti Helde, Estonia, 2024, 85 min.) caused waves of discussion in Estonia even before it was released on cinema screens. The documentary, filmed in more than 60 locations, exposes the current situation of Estonian forests and the consequences of bad political decisions for the common good of society – nature. The film reveals what was hidden under the tightly controlled communication during the war for forests. The same war that is taking place all over the world and in Lithuania. However, in times when opinions strongly differ as to who needs forests – only for wood or also for public health and safety – this natural disaster film also offers solutions on how to break out of the deadlock of debate and move towards a better understanding of who really needs forests.
“Sengirės Kinas” is a new project combining cinema and education on the topic of ecology, inspired by the impact of Mindaugas Survila’s film “Sengirė” on the protection of Lithuania’s old-growth forests. The documentary poem, beloved by the audience, showed that cinema can become a powerful tool for awakening curiosity and respect for nature, from which real changes begin. Thanks to the film and the “Sengirės Fondo”, the word sengirė today means not only the most valuable type of forest – it has become a synonym for good cinema, nature knowledge and conservation.
