about

The best decision to start the Year of the Horse is the exhibition “Year of the Horse” by Panevėžys photographer Stasys Povilaitis. Stasys Povilaitis best of all Lithuanian photographers understood the essence of the horse, its plasticity and psyche, the beauty and drama of this animal. The photographer devoted many years of his creative work to studying the photogenicity of this animal. However, observing horses began much earlier. As Stasys Povilaitis tells us: “My earliest childhood memories are related to horses. I usually spent my summer holidays with my relatives in the village. There I learned how to harness and unharness a horse, and there I fell off a horse for the first time. I even knew how to jump over a ditch while riding, although today, of course, I would never repeat that feat. I really enjoyed visiting the hippodrome. Later, I started going to stables. I traveled all over Lithuania like this, until I finally settled in the Kėdainiai district, where I discovered the largest herd of heavy horses in Lithuania. Over time, it became a constant target of my observations and a source of photographic inspiration. I watched those horses for a long time. I photographed them for even longer.”
Stasys Povilaitis was born in Kaunas. Since 1989. Member of the Lithuanian Union of Photographic Artists. In 2005, he was granted the status of an artist.
