about
The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of the artist, photographer, book illustrator, interior designer, architect, and gallerist Valdas Gilis (1960–2021).
(…) Although we will not recognize specific landscapes in Gilius' paintings, they reveal what is unique and special in the color and lighting of the landscape. Landscapes in his paintings are directly intertwined with interior motifs, the boundary between outdoor and indoor spaces is erased. Real motifs turn into fantastic ones. Flowers in pots grow to giant trees, human figures, having lost their body volume and weight, float in the air. All environmental motifs are strongly abstracted. They interest the author not so much as a poetic image or aesthetically, but also for their energy.
The artist's paintings, which approach abstract compositions, are characterized by great compositional diversity. And yet, several features characteristic of his composition can be distinguished. All canvases are characterized by balanced tectonic structures, which are dynamically contrasted by the impulsive expression of broad strokes.
