Hunting for dukes along the paths of the Birštonas manor

education / cultural passport

In the only eco-friendly electric cars in the Baltic States, accompanied by a tour guide, historian-pedagogue , and guide, students set off on the trails of the Birštonas resort: they visit Žvėrinčius Forest, Vytautas Park and Mound, Škėvoniai Ridge with the highest observation tower in Lithuania. Since 1413, all the most famous kings of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Grand Dukes, and their ladies have passed through them.
While driving, with the help of an audio guide, students are given a lesson on the history of the Royal Hunting and Recreation Estate, according to their age: how hunting estate entertainment was organized for economic reasons in medieval Europe and what titles of persons participated in the Birštonas hunts; how King Jogaila and Grand Duke Vytautas used the month-long hunts to discuss political issues; how the great Birštonas Forest was protected, maintained and inherited in the 15th–16th centuries.
After stopping at the most important historical recreation sites, students are involved in practical tasks : climbing Vytautas's Mound, testing their endurance in hunting areas in the Žvėrinčius Forest, exploring the vastness of the Birštonas Forest, named after the Melnas Peace Treaty of 1422, and climbing the highest tower in Lithuania .
